Dear
Friends
We are delighted to be able to inform you
that Written Declaration 17/2003 calling for
the European Union to ban the sale of dog and cat
fur has already been signed by a majority of the
627 MEPs, five days before the cut off point of
22nd December. This means that this Declaration is
now the official position of the
EU.
The Conservative MEP Struan Stevenson, the
author of WD17/2003, said
today:
"This is fantastic news. 318 MEPs
now support moves to make the trade of cat and dog
fur illegal. The Commission should now listen to the
Parliament and bring in new proposals to ban this
vile trade across the
EU.
The European Commission contends that the
sale of cat and dog fur in Europe is not its
problem. This is despite tens of thousands of
citizens who have demanded action, the majority of
EU Ministers of Agriculture who have asked for a
ban, and now 318 MEPs who have signed the
Declaration calling for an EU-wide ban. It is
about time the Commission took
notice."
Confirmed reports state that already
as many as 329 MEPs have signed, sending a clear
message to those national politicians and
EU Commissioners who have so
far refused to address this problem. We
trust that this will adopted
and a Directive issued without
delay.
On this bright note, may we wish all our
members, friends and supporters a very happy
festive
season.
Our continued thanks to all of you for
your support and for caring enough to try to make
a difference.
